While all varieties of potatoes are loaded with vitamins and nutrients, an electric current produced by the tubers can blow your mind. Here’s how to create electricity with a potato that can produce enough energy to light up a room!

Did you know that plugging in a potato can create a magnetic field? This firm-fleshed food can light a light bulb and cause an electrical voltage if the rules of this experiment are followed. This one is perfect for kids!

How to make electricity with potatoes?

Beyond being delicious when cooked,  the potato full of health benefits  can produce electrical energy if you know how to do it. You can  drill a positive terminal into it . The negative terminal is also essential to create current. This tuber is ideal for introducing children to understanding how electricity works. Toddlers understand best how this power moves in full circuit.

Any variety of potato can produce electricity to light up a room. If these foods are potentially the source of a continuous electrical current, it is for one reason only. They contain sugar,  water, a conductive element  but also acid to create a chemical reaction between the anode (zinc) and the cathode (copper). By connecting, these electrons release energy but at low voltage. The copper and zinc participating in this energy production when they are in the tubers therefore become a positive and negative terminal which allows the movement of electrons in the potatoes. To create light, a bulb must be placed between the two terminals to form an electrical circuit, the power of which is measured in watts.

What do we need for the potato to produce electricity?

To have sufficient voltage to produce light, you will need a large boiled potato,  two zinc nails, a coin, a light bulb of your choice, two pennies  and three pieces of copper wire. These tools will be needed for electrons to flow through this system D device.

If these tubers are good for making baked potatoes and many preparations, they can also be the subject of a new experience. To do this, you will have to cut the potato in half and make a small cut in each half to be able to put a coin in it. Wrap a different piece of copper wire around the two pieces and glue the pieces into the slots . The third copper wire will need to be around one of the zinc nails that you drive into each part of the food. Use the copper wire and glue it to the nails so as to bind each half of the potato. The free ends of the copper wires will be an electricity generator that will light the bulb or your LED.

If  these do-it-yourself foods  can serve as the main ingredient for a gratin, a variety of potatoes might light a light bulb. Only exception:  this experiment does not allow to feed high voltage light bulbs . This guide is effective for equipment that requires only 0.5 volts, such as a low voltage LED for example.

Why does my potato battery not produce electricity?

If that doesn’t work, it will be important to check the wires and connections. The zinc functions as the anode and the copper as the cathode. Make sure you have not connected steel wires. Use  alligator  clips  to light the bulb more easily.

Does boiling a potato increase its electrical output?

While a potato cut in half and raw can do the trick for generating light, you can get a higher power output if you boil it for 8 minutes. The reason ? Boiling causes the organic tissues inside the tuber to decompose and  this lowers the resistance . Result: the circulation of electrons is faster.

One thing is certain: baked potatoes are not only delicious for the taste buds. They can amaze you to light a light bulb easily!
