Anyone’s patience can wear thin when surrounded by the constant buzzing of flies. Unsuccessfully waving your hands away can make you look pretty silly. In such situations, knowing how to get rid of flies can be very helpful. So instead of a swatter, arm yourself with some know-how to get rid of flies.

Really, the only advantage small insects like flies have against us is their reproductive prowess. The average lifespan of flies is about a month and they multiply like crazy during this time. The result is the endless population you wage war against.

Speed is one of the other physical attributes that gives certain varieties of flies a distinct advantage over others. Remember that you rarely get lucky trying to eliminate a fly?

To get rid of flies effectively, you have to target their natural weaknesses. Flies are naturally attracted to light and odors. They are also repelled by the strong smells of certain herbs and essential oils. You can use these facts to trap, kill or repel flies.

Here is a method to quickly get rid of flies indoors and outdoors.

Use a DIY Fly Trap

With a little effort, you can build your own fly trap. You can place the trap indoors or outdoors to trap pesky flies and get rid of them.

These devices trap flies by using their basic instincts against them. Their powerful affinity with the stimulus of smell and light draws them into the trap. They are rarely able to escape and can be taken down at your convenience.

The sweet, irresistible smell of fermentation provides the scent, attracting flies to enter the trap through the holes in the plastic wrap.

If you are worried that the flies will escape the same way, rest assured that they will not be able to. This is because the light stimulus will work against them. To them, all the plastic wrap is going to look like an invisible wall. They will be unable to distinguish where the holes are and there will be no strong smell to guide them.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is basically fermented apple juice. Rotten or fermenting fruit is nothing less than a delight for flies. It is the perfect bait to attract a variety of flies.

Adding a little apple cider vinegar dish soap will make the trap more deadly. The dish soap will break the surface tension of the liquid, causing the flies to sink on contact and eliminating any chance of survival.

Things you will need:

  • Apple cider vinegar (the smell of apple cider vinegar attracts flies) – 2 cups
  • Liquid dish soap (flies sink and drown in dish soap) – 1 tbsp
  • mason jar
  • Plastic wrap
  • Toothpick

Step 1. Mix apple cider vinegar and dish soap in a mason jar

  • Pour 2 cups of ACV into a mason jar.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap.

Step 2. Secure the mouth of the jar with plastic wrap

  • Stretch a piece of plastic wrap over the mouth of the Mason jar, sealing it completely.

Step 3. Punch several holes in the plastic wrap

  • To allow flies to enter the trap, use a toothpick to make several perforations in the plastic wrap. The smell of apple cider vinegar coming out of the holes will direct them to the trap.

Place this trap anywhere you need to manage a fly threat. Once the flies are trapped and dead, you can easily get rid of them and clean the mason jar.
