Almost half of our homes have humidity levels that are too high. In addition to unpleasant odor and material damage, it can cause respiratory problems and other negative health effects. Our tip for eliminating this unhealthy water.

  1. Ventilate daily

Even if it is winter and the outside temperature is around zero degrees, there is nothing to do! Ventilating your home between five and ten minutes a day is essential for renewing the ambient air and expelling excess moisture. If possible, draft across multiple windows. If the whole house must be adequately ventilated, insist in the most humid environments such as the bathroom or kitchen.

  1. Clean the VMC

VMC (Controlled Mechanical Ventilation) remains by far the best remedy to constantly renew the air and thus avoid excess humidity. It can be single or double flow. In the first case, the device is content to suck the air from the housing to reject it outside. While a dual flow VMC has the advantage of being able to recover the heat from the extracted air rather than throw it outside. For your CMV to function optimally, be sure to clean the vents once a year using a vacuum cleaner. Over time, dust tends to accumulate on the grids with the risk of preventing air circulation.

  1. Opt for double glazing

If water droplets drip inside windows and often mist up, it’s a clear sign of dampness. With double-glazed windows, you will avoid excessive temperature changes and limit condensation problems. Tip: Install ventilation grilles on the new joinery to allow air to circulate.

  1. Check the tightness

Since the bathroom is known to be the wettest room in the house, be sure to seal the seams around the tub, shower, and sink. Adding a heater can help dry out the air. Install a towel radiator, and if that’s not possible, there are small auxiliary heaters that you turn on before washing and turn off fifteen minutes later.

  1. Consider the dehumidifier

You can buy an air dehumidifier on the market. You will have the choice between a chemical or electrical device.

The first works on the principle of condensation. Contains one sodium chloride tablet or cartridge. This will absorb the moisture to turn it into water. Then empty the trash. An electric dehumidifier, on the other hand, sucks in the humid air contained in the environment before drying it, cooling it, then heating it to a temperature identical to that of the environment in which it is located. The air comes out without humidity.

  1. Look at the wardrobes

When you open your closets, a foul musty smell emerges. It is probably due to the humidity. To absorb it, all you need to do is put a few pieces of charcoal in a box with a lid that has holes in it in some places. A natural and effective method that won’t cost you much.

Also make sure to clear the furniture a few inches from the walls. In case of humidity, the air must circulate to avoid the formation of mold.

  1. have a green thumb

Some varieties of plants that live in tropical environments have the power to dehumidify the ambient air. They draw water from the air to feed and thus reduce the abundant humidity in your home. For example, the Boston fern is best in this role. It should be placed in a bright place, but away from direct sunlight. If your living room has little light, a spathiphyllum will be just as effective.

With the naked eye

To maintain a healthy interior, the humidity level must be between 40% and 60%. There is no need for a measuring tool if your home is above this average, some signs are right: presence of fog on the windows, smell of mold, peeling wallpaper or baseboards, appearance of yellowish stains on the walls …
