Every night the pillows absorb sweat and get dirty. They accumulate cosmetic residue and even dust mites. Like pillowcases that need to be changed often, pillows need to be washed regularly.

If properly cleaned and disinfected, they can ensure better sleep and prevent respiratory problems. Find out how to take care of your pillow.

You have to wash the pillow.

Pillows should be washed at least once or twice a year or, alternatively, every time you notice unpleasant stains or odors.

It is also important to read the manufacturer’s instructions on the label, some materials used to make the pillow require a specific wash.

Anyway, there is a basic rule: in most cases you can wash them in the washing machine (some washing machines also have special washing programs). Also, do not wash them at too high a temperature and do not use too high a rotation of the drum.

It is best to clean them separately for better cleaning.

For each type of pillow, a specific wash

–   For feather pillows:   use hand wash or wool programs at a maximum temperature between 40 and 60º.

–   For polyester cushions:   hand wash at 30-40º or dry clean.

–   For microfiber pillows:   they require synthetic detergents and can even be washed at 60°.

–   For latex pillows:   wash by hand in a large sink or bathtub with warm, soapy water.

As for the type of detergent, it is always good to choose a detergent for delicate clothes.

How to dry the pillows after washing?

You can use the dryer to dry the pillows, but for feather pillows it is better to have a longer program, as well as a low temperature. Another tip, it is always good to take the cushions out of the dryer several times and give them a little shake before the drying program ends.

They can also be dried outdoors, not in direct sunlight but in a place where the temperature is high enough and the weather is not too humid.

If you don’t have a hair dryer, you can use a hair dryer to speed up the process.

For cushions that are not machine washable, you can clean them regularly with a cloth slightly dampened with a mild laundry soap. If you see stains, you can clean them with a fabric brush.

Another useful tip is to leave the cushions outdoors from time to time, for example when making the bed: in good weather, exposing them to the sun for half an hour is a good way to neutralize bad odours. .
