To grow your own seedless lettuce indoors, there is a simple trick! Don’t throw away the last part of the head of lettuce, plant it in the water! This way you can grow lettuce over and over again on that side that usually gets thrown away. Let’s see how!

Try it yourself!

How to grow lettuce from leftover lettuce?

  1. First, remove the largest outer leaves from the head of lettuce. Then, with a knife, remove the bottom of the lettuce head and make a clean cut about 3 cm from the base.
  2. You have now obtained the base of the lettuce heads. Set the leaves aside to make a delicious salad.
  3. Simply grab a bowl, glass, or salad bowl to hold the entire bottom of the lettuce.
  4. Pour the necessary amount of water into the container so that the base of the lettuce is submerged by about one centimeter.
  5. Put the bottom of the head of lettuce, which you normally think of as wasted, in a bowl of water.
  6. Place the    container   inside near the window. So it will be exposed to light, but not direct sunlight.
  7. Write the start date of the „experiment“ on the glass or bowl and remember to change the water once a day.

When and how to transfer lettuce in pots or in the ground?

At 15 days you can already see that the head is well developed. The first root will form and, most importantly, the first leaf will form in the center of the lettuce.

It is necessary to remove the outer leaves without damaging the roots. Then you can transplant the lettuce into an ordinary round pot filled with a mixture of humus and peat. Dig about two fingers deep, then fill the jar with soil.

After transferring to jar, sprinkle lettuce liberally immediately. If possible, enrich the soil with natural fertilizers. Place the lettuce in the sun so that it grows little by little. Growing lettuce in pots on the balcony will be easy, and you can even invite your children to the experiment.

When you harvest your first new lettuce, you can repeat the experiment. You can save on the cost of buying seeds and always have fresh lettuce on hand.
