Condensation on windows is a common problem, especially in winter. Excess humidity and the difference in temperature between the inside and outside of the house are the cause of this problem. Condensation on the windows not only obstructs the view, but also promotes mold growth. To avoid this inconvenience, discover these 4 indoor plants, effective in getting rid of humidity and condensation.

Excess moisture is the main factor causing condensation. Some houseplants are able to absorb moisture from the surrounding air thanks to their foliage. This way you will avoid condensation on the glass, but also mold problems.

Which indoor plants eliminate condensation?

Some plants have a high moisture absorption capacity. The latter is then transferred through the vascular tissue to the roots of the plants.

– The peace lily, to avoid condensation

Spathiphyllum or peace lily is a perennial plant of the Araceae family. This tropical plant loves heat and humidity. It absorbs the humidity of the room in which it is located,   through its leaves.  It is therefore effective in reducing the level of humidity in the home,   and avoiding condensation problems.  In addition to this, the peace lily is a depolluting plant, which purifies the ambient air of toxins.

To grow, spathiphyllum needs a lot of light,   but without direct sunlight so as not to burn its foliage.  This plant also needs regular watering. However, it is important   to let the soil dry out between two waterings.  Too much water can cause root rot. To provide your plant with the moisture it needs, you can spray the foliage or place the pot on a saucer containing water and gravel. Repot the peace lily every two years and remember   to fertilize it during the flowering period.

– Boston fern, against humidity and condensation

Boston fern, or nephrolepis, is an evergreen perennial. This tropical plant loves humidity. Thanks to its leaves,   it captures the humidity of the air. Thus, it balances the hygrometry of the house, in order to avoid the formation of condensation on the windows. Also, in winter,   the humidity level must be below 40%,  to avoid the formation of droplets on the windows. Note that you can also place Boston fern in the bathroom to remove any stagnant moisture there.

This houseplant is easy to care for and   suitable for people who don’t have a green thumb.  To take care of your fern, place it in a well-lit area avoiding direct sunlight. The Boston fern can stand frost and cold. The ambient temperature   must not be below 12 °.  Choose a special soil for your plant and place a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to aid drainage. Water as soon as the soil is dry and regularly mist the foliage   with non-calcareous water. You can fertilize your plant in the spring, with a green plant fertilizer. Note that the Boston fern can be prone  to attacks by mealybugs or spider mites.

– The orchid to avoid condensation

Orchid is a perennial and tropical flowering plant. It is effective   in reducing the hygrometry of the house,   thanks to its ability to capture moisture from the air. To take care of your plant, place it in a bright spot, making sure it is   exposed to partial shade.  The orchid does not tolerate cold and frost. Prefer a temperature between 18 ° and 21 ° C for your plant, and keep it away from drafts, but also   from the radiator that dries the ambient air. Indeed, the orchid appreciates humidity. Water it with non-calcareous water, at room temperature, and spray the foliage regularly. Also be careful not to leave stagnant water in the saucer or cache-pot. This can rot its roots and cause your plant to wilt.

– Cactus to eliminate condensation

Cacti or cacti are succulent plants, characterized by their fleshy tissues,   capable of capturing and retaining water from the air. Furthermore, humidity is nothing more than   the presence of water in the air.  That said, cacti reduce the humidity of the surrounding air and help prevent condensation from forming.

Whichever cactus variety you choose, these succulents only need   a small amount of water. Lightly water your cactus once a week in the summer and stop all watering in the winter, as the cactus   goes into a dormant period.  Cacti also need strong light and a soil rich in sand or perlite   to improve drainage. Growth of cacti is slow. It will only need to be repotted infrequently. It is enough to repot every 3 or 4 years. Be sure to fertilize the plant   with cactus fertilizer   once a month in spring.

Thanks to these houseplants you will eliminate excess moisture in your home and avoid condensation on the windows, but also the appearance of mold.
