Do not throw away expired brewer’s yeast, you would make a serious mistake. You can use it for your plants.
Brewer’s yeast is an essential ingredient for the preparation of sweets and savory doughs, but it has a short shelf life. If brewer’s yeast deteriorates and is therefore no longer valid, its color will change from a pleasant beige to a pale gray, or mold-like stains may appear on its surface. If you notice these changes, brewer’s yeast will no longer be suitable for your culinary preparations. However, it may not show any visible changes. In this case, you can check its validity by dissolving it in a glass of warm water (not hot, as this would kill it) with a teaspoon of sugar.
If brewer’s yeast has expired, it cannot be used in cooking, but it should not be discarded. In fact, even if it is expired, it retains a number of excellent nutrients for plants: therefore, a fertilizer can be made.
